Despite what his brother—and sponsor—think, Tate isn’t an addict. He has the 30-day chip to prove it. But when his father learns Tate’s been running an illegal card room out of a friend’s dorm to pay off old gambling debts, Tate is cut off. With his family no longer talking to him, his aunt Nora offers him a chance to intern for her political campaign. Juggling school with the intense internship, Tate finds himself buying scratch-off lottery tickets to take the edge off.

Tate is surprised to find the beautiful and calculating Alex Wolf—his first crush and the girl who taught him how to gamble—volunteering with Nora’s campaign, too. Soon, Tate is more drawn to Alex than ever. Her mind games stick in his head, but her vulnerable, softer side gets into his heart. But as tensions rise along the campaign trail, Tate is forced to question whether he’s really addiction-free, after all.

Kate Watson on her first glimpse at the cover:

When I opened up the email from my editor with the Shoot the Moon cover, I think my exact reaction was me yelling, “YES!” which may or may not have woken up my kids. Shoot the Moon is the story of Tate Bertram, whom some readers will remember as Oliver Bertram’s older brother in Seeking Mansfield. Tate is too handsome and smart for his own good, and he prides himself on his ability to read everyone in the room while always being in total control of his own emotions and reactions. He’s also a poker addict, although he’s in total denial of that fact. The cover does a great job capturing the intensity of emotions that I think feature heavily in the novel. The bold red feels edgy and a little gritty—like the book—and the white swirls in the background evoke a feeling of spiraling, though, you know, no spoilers. :) Also, the fact that Tate is wearing a spade—where others wear a heart—on his sleeve literally makes me swoon. The knowing smile on Tate's profile is the icing on the cake.

While Seeking Mansfield is a Jane Austen retelling, Shoot the Moon is inspired by Charles Dickens’ Great Expectations, along with some classic gambling movies like Matt Damon’s Rounders. I hope fans of Seeking Mansfield will enjoy getting updates on Finley, Oliver, and the Bertrams, but new readers won’t have any problems following this story all on its own. And I hope they love it as much as I do.
