An obstinate girl who will not be married.
A soldier desperate to prove himself.
A kingdom on the brink of war.

With a sharp tongue and an unruly temper, Sage Fowler is not what they’d call a lady―which is perfectly fine with her. Deemed unfit for marriage, Sage is apprenticed to a matchmaker and tasked with wrangling other young ladies to be married off for political alliances. She spies on the girls―and on the soldiers escorting them.

As the girls' military escort senses a political uprising, Sage is recruited by a handsome soldier to infiltrate the enemy ranks. The more she discovers as a spy, the less certain she becomes about whom to trust―and Sage becomes caught in a dangerous balancing act that will determine the fate of her kingdom.

TOP TEN POST: The Top Ten Things a Good Spy Needs

  1. A Code Name – Preferably something dashy and indicative of your role in the operation, like Falcon or Wolf. Nothing puny.

  1. A Solid Backstory – To be convincing, you must be a whole person with a history outside the operation. Know your story by heart and make sure everyone you work with knows it as well. Have a couple good anecdotes to tell, but keep them believable and nothing that can be checked on. Borrow an identity if you have to.

  1. A Dagger – You never know when you’ll have to stab someone, cut down a hanging body, or remove a splinter.

  1. A Handler – You must never be caught talking with your enemy’s Number One target or people will know you’re working together. Speak and pass information only through intermediaries.

  1. A Good Memory – You will be called upon to repeat conversations word for word or draw what you’ve seen with accuracy. Lives depend on this.

  1. Willingness to Work in the Dark – The less you know about issues beyond your reach or control, the better. Trust you’ve been told what you need to know, and your orders consider things you don’t understand. This is also important so, if caught, you can’t give up too much valuable information.

  1. Good Judgment and Initiative – That being said, sometimes you’ll be called upon to make decisions which go against or beyond your instructions. This is the trickiest part of working on your own because you may ruin something you don’t understand, yet sometimes you can save lives with a target of opportunity. This can only be gained through experience, so don’t even try exercising it until you have several missions under your belt.

  1. Ability to Improvise – Have several back-up plans and variations on each. Never assume something will go as expected. Have a plan to kill everyone you meet and know where to stash the body.

  1. Sense of Direction – Both in a geographical sense and a planning sense. Be prepared to go against your moral compass to achieve your mission. You can worry about it later.

No Attachments – Under no circumstances should you develop a more than superficial relationship with the people you are working for or against. In both cases, you compromise your judgment and risk not being able to issue critical orders or perform your duties for fear of your friends being harmed.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Erin Beaty was born and raised in Indianapolis, Indiana, which means she can't drive a tractor, but she won't eat veggies that come from a can. She graduated from the US Naval Academy with a degree in rocket science and somehow always ended up writing her study group's lab reports. After serving in the fleet as a weapons officer and a leadership instructor, she resigned to pursue her side hobby of populating the Church of Rome. It still amazes her when other people want to hear the stories that come out of her head.

She and her husband have five children, two cats, and a vegetable garden and live wherever the navy tells them to go.
