Four clans have been at war for centuries: the Kodiak, the Raven, the Wolf and the Ram. Through brutal war tactics, the Ram have dominated the region, inflicting death and destruction on their neighbors.

Seventeen-year-old Zo is a Wolf and a Healer who volunteers to infiltrate the Ram as a spy on behalf of the allied clans. She offers herself as a Ram slave, joining the people who are called the “nameless.” Hers is a suicide mission – Zo’s despair after losing her parents in a Ram raid has left her seeking both revenge and an end to her own misery. But after her younger sister follows her into Rams Gate, Zo must find a way to survive her dangerous mission and keep her sister safe.

What she doesn’t expect to find is the friendship of a young Ram whose life she saves, the confusing feelings she develops for a Ram soldier, and an underground nameless insurrection. Zo learns that revenge, loyalty and love are more complicated than she ever imagined in the first installment of this two-book series.

Author Interview

Hi Jennifer! Congratulations on your upcoming release for NAMELESS. How would you sum up your main character, Zo, in 5 words or less?
Thank you so much!
Hmmm. I’d have to say. Brave. Prejudice. Broken. Selfless. Determined.

I like that you have four clans in NAMELESS, which are the Wolf, Raven, Ram and Kodiak. From the book's description, it sounds like the Ram clan is ruthless. Can you please tell us a little something about each clan?
All of the clans in this book were inspired by one of my favorite cultures in history.
Most of the book takes place inside the walls of Ram’s Gate in a society very similar to that of Ancient Sparta. History buffs will not miss the brutal training methods inspired by the Spartan Agoge System as well as systematic starvation, obsession with a warrior’s shield, and phalanx warfare.
The Raven Clan was inspired by the spiritual and resourcefulness of Navajo culture. The simple diplomacy yet fierce battle tactics of the Vikings inspired the Wolf Clan. And Maori customs, including the art of intimidation and the high value of honesty, contributed to the Kodiak Clan.

This diverse mix of cultures was intended to form a hotbed of prejudice and clashing viewpoints.

I'm looking forward to reading Nameless, and getting to know Zo. What's something you came to admire about Zo?
Zo is a healer in a world that values warriors and fighters. To be an effective healer, you have to be able to love the person you’re healing. That love acts as a fuel, of sorts, for healers and without it, people die. I really enjoyed seeing Zo struggle with the task of “loving” the Ram, her enemy. I also appreciated Zo’s realization that for her to recover (heal) from her past, she had to learn to love herself.
If you were a character in your book, which clan would you be apart of, and why?
I’m drawn to all of the clans, for various reasons. I’m extremely driven, like the Ram. I hold honesty and keeping one’s promises as one of the highest virtues, like the Kodiak. I value diplomacy and teamwork, like the Wolves. But if I had to choose between all of the clans, I’d probably choose the Raven Clan.
Raven are very connected to the earth, their families, and their ancestors. The clan can only be reached by traveling a series of rope bridges high above the ground through a giant Red Wood forest. They rely on incents and meditation to cleanse their minds and bodies of impurities and obtain balance in their lives. They, like the Navajo, respond to death without showing emotion because they believe the spirit of the dead will linger if the people left behind cry and mourn them openly. If a spirit lingers, they cannot return to their ancestors in the earth (not the sky). They believe the giant trees protecting their home have grown so large because they inhabit the spirits of their ancestors—one of the many reasons they worship the earth.
I also appreciate the Raven’s cunning nature and mind-over-matter approach to battle.
The Raven Clan has a leading role in Book 2 of the series, whereas the Ram Clan gets the limelight in Book 1.

You have a lot going on in Nameless. Romance, action, and a whole heck of a lot more. Which element of your story did you enjoy creating the most? Which element was a challenge?
As much as I loved the world building that went in to the creation of NAMELESS, I’d definitely have to say the romance between Gryphon and Zo was my favorite thing to write. It was such a star-crossed love—one that required huge sacrifice on both of their parts. In my opinion, that giant wall between them made the pay off all the more sweet.
I would say weaving sub-plots throughout the story was the most challenging.

Out of all your characters, which characters surprised you the most in terms of the role they ended up playing in the story, from what you first began drafting your story, to the published book?
I think the Historian was the most surprising character in this book. Originally, I intended to have her featured only once as a source of information for Gryphon. As the story progressed, her role grew into an essential part of the plot. She is a perfect example of the dangers of taking people at face value.

Let's talk about your cover! I like its significance to Zo's story. Did you have any say in the cover design?
I was asked for some input in the beginning, but I have to give complete credit and props to my publisher, Georgia McBride, and cover artist, Victoria Faye. When they sent me the original cover art, I literally screamed!
I’ve always been drawn to the concept of Zo using mud to hide her beauty, and though the girl on the cover has her face painted, the symbolism still applies. It really captures Zo’s role in the book as well as the intensity of the story in general. Hats off to Month9Books for another gorgeous cover.
Can you please share a small teaser with us? It can be a line or two from the book.
Gryphon looked away, grateful for the cover of night. “Despite what you think, I am not a monster.”
“No.” Zo picked up her kit from the ground and wiped blood from the corner of her mouth. “You are a Ram.”

Thank you so much!
Thank you so much for having me!
