THE FEARLESS by Emma Pass; Blog Tour: Author Guest Post

Hello and welcome to today's blog tour stop for THE FEARLESS by Emma Pass, hosted by Random House/Delacorte. I'm thrilled to have Emma on the blog today. Before I share my guest post from her, here's a little bit about her new book, The Fearless.

ABOUT THE FEARLESS

THE FEARLESS (Delacorte Press Books for Young Readers|On sale: April 14, 2014 | $17.99), a fast-paced futuristic thriller that is perfect for fans of The Hunger GamesDivergent, and The Passage. THE FEARLESS is filled with nonstop action, chilling secrets, and romance.

When the Fearless invaded, they injected everyone in their path with the same serum that stripped them of humanity. Life became a waking nightmare. Cass has the invasion seared in her memory. Seven years later, she and her brother, Jori, are living on Hope Island in a community of survivors. No one can enter, and no one can leave. It's the only way to stay safe.

But when Hope Island's security is breeched and Jori is taken by the Fearless, Cass will risk everything to get him back.

If I was Fearless…

I'm not a very brave person, really. I'm scared of heights. I can't swim. I don't like the dark. I've never been skydiving, and you wouldn't get me within a hundred miles of a bungee jump. No thank you. I'm happiest curled up with a book (I am partial to a good horror novel, so perhaps I'm not such a scaredy-cat after all), or walking with my crazy greyhound G-Dog.

However, if I could become utterly, truly fearless for a while, there's three things I'd love to do:

1) Explore the Paris Catacombs.
The Paris Catacombs are ossuiaries, first opened in the late 1700s, which hold the remains of around 6 million people. The network of tunnels, quarries and caverns covers 200 miles. It’s a well known tourist attraction – I've visited myself, and seen the piles of neatly stacked skulls, a grisly spectacle if ever there was one. But the Denfert-Rochereau Ossuary, the tiny part of the Catacombs which is open to the public, isn't really that scary (unless you have cartilogenophobia – a fear of bones). What's truly frightening about the Catacombs is the rest of it – the bit that's out of bounds. Endless pitch dark passageways and crumbling chambers littered with bones. Urban explorers known as cataphiles enter them through drains and sewers and other secret entrances. Imagine what might happen if your torch went out or you got lost – terrifying!

2) Go up in a hot air balloon
As I said before, I'm scared of heights, so the idea of floating 2000 feet or so above the ground, held up by what is basically a bag of heated air, doesn't exactly fill me with excitement (and the world record for a hot air balloon flight is 65,000 feet – that's higher than a commercial airliner! *shudder*). But if I could get rid of my fear, I'd love to try it.

3) Cross Antarctica
Antarctica is the Earth's southernmost continent, and at 14 million square km, is nearly two times larger than Australia. On average it's the coldest and windiest of all the continents and has so little preciptation, it's considered a desert. Temperatures have been known to plummet to almost -129 ºF. It's a truly hostile place, and anyone wanting to cross it would have to be extremely brave, and perhaps a little bit crazy. But it's somewhere I've always wanted to visit, so if I could become fearless for a while, perhaps I'd give it a try!

On second thoughts, just thinking about trying these things is giving me the shivers. I think I'll stay at home and read a book instead!
