When you're being hunted, who can you trust?

For the first time since she escaped from her school many months ago, Eve can sleep soundly. She's living in Califia, a haven for women, protected from the terrifying fate that awaits orphaned girls in The New America.

But her safety came at a price: She was forced to abandon Caleb, the boy she loves, wounded and alone at the city gates. When Eve gets word that Caleb is in trouble, she sets out into the wild again to rescue him, only to be captured and brought to the City of Sand, the capital of The New America.

Trapped inside the City walls, Eve uncovers a shocking secret about her past--and is forced to confront the harsh reality of her future. When she discovers Caleb is alive, Eve attempts to flee her prison so they can be together--but the consequences could be deadly. She must make a desperate choice to save the ones she loves . . . or risk losing Caleb forever.

In this breathless sequel to "Eve," Anna Carey returns to her tale of romance, adventure, and sacrifice in a world that is both wonderfully strange and chillingly familiar-quoted from Goodreads

A riveting sequel with surprising twists, suspense and a heartbreakingly beautiful romance that will leave you clinging to each page.

ONCE is book that takes readers deeper into Eve's vivid and chilling world, uncovers some shocking secrets and will lure you into a city full of danger. It's a story that surprisingly got to my emotional side more than I thought it would. Anna doesn't hold back on all that takes place in ONCE. Talk about surprises, this is one book who's unpredictable plot line will leave you re-reading the ending just to make sure you read what happens correctly. I did NOT see that one coming at all! WOW!

Anna's writing is AMAZING! I love it when I can pick up a sequel and not have an author spend a good portion of the first chapter rehashing everything that happened in the previous, which is not the case with Once. Anna threw me right back into Eve's journey and richly detailed world, and made me feel like I didn't miss a beat with her series. Similar to Eve, I found myself just a fascinated with Anna's world building, as I am with her writing. The world in this series is beautiful, intriguing, and dangerous. This times the story goes from being set in the wilderness and moves to the city. It's here that the danger ironically is higher than it was when Eve was on the run. There's shocking discoveries, secrets that are uncovered, and some heartbreaking sacrifices that are made here, which adds to the feeling of dread and entrapment that encompasses the city for Eve.

Eve is stronger and more resilient than ever. She's a girl who will do what ever it takes to hold onto what she believes/knows to be the truth, and will do anything to protect those she loves. Some of her actions completely caught me off guard and unexpectedly take this storyline into a whole new direction. Eve and this series's storyline is far more unpredictable than I first realized, and I loved what Anna did with this book. I can't give all the credit to Eve, because Caleb (go ahead and sigh) does some equally surprising things in this book as well. I am such a sucker for their romance! It's sweet, breathtaking and one that's full of incredibly heartbreaking sacrifices. That's one of the things I admire about both of these characters. They will do whatever it takes, and defy all the odds against them to save/protect one another.

Caleb and Eve are just two of the characters I enjoy in this series. Anna pulls out some shocking revelations with some of the characters we met in Eve, as well as with the introduction of some new key players into the series. Let me just say, "Let the conspiracy theories begin!", because nothing in this series is what it seems. Every shocking revelation that gets revealed in this book only twists up the plot line that much more to where I don't even fully know what is going to happen next now. It's so fabulously crafted, and well written that Anna's fans will be begging her for more when they finish this book. If you loved Eve, wait till you pick right back up with the adventure and uncover the danger that awaits you in ONCE. I HIGHLY recommend picking this sequel up!

  1. I keep seeing this around, and it makes me think that I need to give Eve another shot. I didn't like it the first time, but I was really rushed and not in a very good frame of mind for reading an e-galley. With all the good reviews Once is getting, I think I'll start over and give the series a fair shot.
