ReplyDeleteIMMORTAL RULES borrows features familiar to readers of post-apocalyptics - living in a rotting city, scavenging for food, looking for a potentially mythical safe harbor where mankind still flourishes. There's a scene where Allie finds a survival bunker ripped straight from Cormac McCarthy's The Road. It's also a vampire book, so it jumps through the familiar hoops of learning to hunt and finding the human inside the predator, yada yada, and it's a zombie book. All that and, yes, a kitchen sink.
ReplyDeleteThis was my first introduction to Julie Kagawa and I think I've sated my curiosity where she's concerned, but I wouldn't warn anyone away from the book. Especially readers who aren't exhausted by the themes and worldbuilding tropes in the book, like I am, or too desperate for something new to appreciate a popular motif, as I may have been.
