Today's discussion is about: Chapter 13: Girl Found Dead
- I don't know why, but Alec's surprise over Magnus and Camille's past makes me snicker. I can totally picture the look on his face and hear the surprise in his voice when acknowledges Magnus dated not just a vampire, but at "girl" vampire. Over all, were you surprised with Alec's reaction to Camille and Magnus or were you excepting him to to be more dramatic about it?
- We finally get our answers as to what's been going on with Jace and we also get to see him with his guard down as he tells Clary about his dreams, why he had the knife, his fear of him killing Clary and his thinking that he deserves this. I found it interesting how he phrased his thinking that Jace Lightwood deserves what's going on and Jace Morgenstern doesn't. Clary makes an interesting point. She said she thinks someone is doing this to him. Jace mentioned it could possibly be Sebastian, Clary thinks he's dead. Who do you think could be controlling Jace in his dreams?
- We learn more about the Shadow Hunter rituals from Jace & Clary's visit to the Silent Brothers, seeking their help for Jace. We also learn that Clary upset the balance of life and death, good and evil (at the end of COG). In bringing Jace back from the dead, he came back unprotected from all the previous Shadow Hunter rituals given to him as protection. Do you think the Silent Brothers will be able to protect Jace and stop whomever is possessing him?
- Camille confesses to Magnus that she killed the Circle Members, but someone more powerful than her had her do it, though she doesn't regret it. Do you think the same person behind this could be the same person controlling Jace?

Mmm this chapter was so interesting! I can't answer to your questions without posting spoilers so I just wanted to tell you how this chapter surprised me, the first time I've read it. It was a relief to finally find out why Jace was acting like that. I thought that the scene where he confessed his problems was so sweet because Clary could finally help him in some way.
ReplyDeleteRe-reading Camille and Magnus'speach, after having read Clockwork Prince, made me understand a little more. Reading about Will Herondale made me shiver a little (Can't wait to read Clockwork Princess!!) and, in my opinion, Alec's reaction was completely understandable.
I know it's hard to reply without mentioning spoilers. I agree with your comments and I thought the same. It was a relief to find out what was going on with Jace, and it was a relief to know that Clary was still willing to do anything to help him. I felt that Alec was justified in his reaction, though I excepted him to freak out a bit more. I felt that Camille's mention of Will was a low blow for her to get to Magnus.
DeleteYes, she definitely knows how to work with other people's mind. :) I think she's such an interesting character! Maybe in Clockwork Princess we will find more about her and Magnus. Sure is that she still is kind of possessive about him, maybe she doesn't love him but she hates the fact that he's in love with a Shadowhunters ( another time)!

*I thought it was totally cute that Alec was jealous, especially when he says "a girl vampire" lol! I think I expected him to act that way. He is not one to be overly dramatic over stuff. I think it was exactly how I expected it to him to be.
ReplyDelete*I think I was with Clary on thinking someone else was doing it, I just didn't really know who I thought it was. I had a few people in mind. I am glad that Clary knows the truth about his behavior now.
*I think I really wanted to hope that they could help him.
*I think I was pretty sure it had to be the same person. It had to all tie in together somehow. It would have been a bit too convenient for Camille to be back and Jace having the dreams or whatever. I think that is also the reason why Camille wants Simon on her side. I think she is afraid of whoever is giving her orders.
Alec's comment makes me laugh. I can totally hear the shock in his voice when he says that.

- I wanted them to help, but I knew that it wouldn't end up that way. It woudl have been too east just to cure him, right? :)
- At this point, I didn't know what to think about Camille. I agree that she was terrified of the person that was behind of of this, which made me think that it had to be REALLY bad.
I think Alec was stunned {almost} speechless. ;P
ReplyDeleteI think there are many possibilities as to who could be messing with Jace's head.
The Silent Brothers rock out loud, so yes, they will be able to help Jace and complete the protection ritual.
The one ordering Camille and tormenting Jace could be one in the same because both situations require great power.

I am still loving this Read-A-Long, and I want to mention that when I first read this chapter's title, I was so afraid that it was Clary! I had forgotten about Maureen ;P
I think Alec's reaction was perfect and just plain funny. I see why he would be confused with Magnus being with a girl, but I'm glad Alec didn't go completely crazy because Magnus is very old and has dated a lot in his time. So Alec can't really get mad at him for any of that but this scene totally made me laugh.
ReplyDeleteI loved that Jace was finally opening up to Clary. Took him long enough but this is Jace and he's a guy, so better late than never. I think Jace's idea of Johnathan doing this to him makes sense. Except the whole dead part but then again Johnathan was made very powerful so if he's still somehow alive, I could definitely see him doing this to Jace as revenge.
I think the Silent Brothers are the only ones who can help Jace. They are extremely old and powerful and if they can't help Jace then I don't know who could.
It probably is the same person, but I don't see a connection. Killing Circle Members is one thing. They did horrible things and never really got punished for it. Going after a shadowhunter kid, Jace, I don't see where that would come into play with everything else happening. He hasn't done anything wrong so I don't see why the same person would want to personally torture Jace.
Alec sounds so naive when he asks magnus about his past. Poor Magnus when he asks Alec if he should spend eternity alone. Magnus sounds unhappy when he tells Simon in a hundred years we will be all that's left. Jace has been forever tainted by Valentine, first by the things valentine raised him to believe like to love is to destroy, And then by the way that people will always connect him as Valentine son I hope that the silent brothers can help him and then maybe he can be reborn not as a morgentern or Herondale but as a Lightwood.
ReplyDeleteI think Sabastian is dead too, so I can imagine who can be doing this to Jace but I think is someone else doing this to him, and finally hi tell Clary what is happening to him. that is good.
ReplyDeleteI was not surprised by Alec. I would have acted the same way. Honestly, I admire that he is trying to deal with it and while I hope they stay a couple, I would understand if Alec couldn't handle it.
ReplyDeleteI think perhaps someone from his past. Maybe Valentine's not dead. Or one of Valentine's henchmen maybe.
I think that the silent Brothers will try but considering there are two other books coming out, they`ll most likely fail. After all, there needs to be a plot.
I'm not sure about anything Camille says.
I think Alec handled it well...itis his first relationship...of course he will be jealous....

To command or control Camille someone would have to be vry powerful....powerful enough to get into Jaces dreams....

Alec's response was exactly what I thought it would be. I'm sure he feels like his heart had been stomped into a million pieces to not only learn about Magnus's other relationships but be standing face to face to one and a female vampire at that.
ReplyDeleteI feel like it's not Sebastian that is causing the "influence" with Jace but rather the demon who helped create Sebastian as a revenge. I believe Clary totally hit the nail on the head.
The Silent Brothers have had trouble before, but surely that can protect Jace now, right?
I have not a clue who willed Camille to commit the shadow hunter murders. Not a whole lot is adding up and suspense is killing me.
I can't answer most of these questions without any spoilers.... But I will say that I love the conversations Alec and Magnus have about his past relationships. It makes me smile, both because it's funny and because it's nice to know that some people do think about relationships like that instead of how most people treat them today, like they are not worth the commitment. I also love the ID references.
ReplyDeleteI remember the title of this chapter- Girl Found Dead- really freaking me out the first time I read this. I thought it was Maia or someone like that. And then, at the end of the chapter, all the pieces started falling into place. I can totally empathize with Simon- I was shocked about Maureen and I almost felt sick to my stomach, thinking about her, the way I did with Max in CoG. It always bothers me when little kids die in books or movies, especially when it's so unexpected.
I felt kind of bad for Alec because it was like the thought hadn't occurred to him until Magnus said anything.
ReplyDeleteJace tends to take the weight of the world on his shoulders, and so when he confesses all of his fears it just sounds like Jace. At this point I had no clue who it have been messing with him, but I knew it had to do be someone pretty powerful.
I really wanted to believe that they could, but it seems like whenever Jace had gone to the Silent City, nothing has gone the way it should. *crosses fingers*
I definitely the one going after Jace could have been the one who made Camille kill the Circle Members. And again it had to have been someone powerful, because Camille wouldn't have even considered doing it for some lowly demon, etc.
I wasn't surprised the way Alec acted when he found out Magnus dated Camille. And I think it's ok for him to be a little jealous it's his first relationship. And finally jace tells clary what's been going on with him. And I have no clue as to who is controlling jaces dreams but it's definitely someone really powerful.
ReplyDeleteI do think the same person that Camille is working for is behind Jace's control. It always seems there are consequences when it comes to life and death. Alex just made me laugh, how many times have you heard the exact same comments and actions that Alex showed when he found out about Magnus and Camille.
ReplyDeleteI was indeed expecting a little more dramatic reaction from Alec but I realized that it was okay how he reacted cause he is a very serious person. Serious people don't usually have over reactions.

Something tells me that the Silent Brothers will have trouble proceedings with the ritual or they will take longer than said.
Well is surprising there is someone in a higher rank than Camille, I thought she was her own boss but apparently not. It could be Sebastian maybe not, who knows?

ReplyDeleteI didn't except Alec to be so dramatic. He's normally so calm and collected. But I guess it's understandable. It must be hard to date someone immortal. I thought that whole part was hilarious to read, though.
I don't feel like I can answer the rest of the questions without spoiling...so I will keep my mouth shut.
I feel like this chapter should have one mega SPOILER ALERT. But then again, the book is out.
ReplyDeleteI cant really answer these except for to say I'm pretty sure I had the same look Alec did when Magnus said that he dated, not a vampire, but a *girl.* SHOCKER! Shouldn't happen. Made me laugh though.
Alec is pretty cute in this chapter. The shock of Magnus being with a "girl" and the jealousy. I am very curious how Cassie is going to handle this as this series goes on. Obviously Alec will die at some point and Magnus won't. I wonder if Alec can live with that. In that situation, I'd be very unhappy.
