5 stars- I love this series

Evie finally has the normal life she’s always longed for. But she’s shocked to discover that being ordinary can be . . . kind of boring. Just when Evie starts to long for her days at the International Paranormal Containment Agency, she’s given a chance to work for them again. Desperate for a break from all the normalcy, she agrees.

But as one disastrous mission leads to another, Evie starts to wonder if she made the right choice. And when Evie’s faerie ex-boyfriend Reth appears with devastating revelations about her past, she discovers that there’s a battle brewing between the faerie courts that could throw the whole supernatural world into chaos. The prize in question? Evie herself.

So much for normal.

What a bleeping fantastic sequel. Kiersten made me fall in love with her characters, her world and her writing in Paranormalcy, and she had me loving them even more in Supernaturally.

There are a lot of things I enjoyed about this sequel, and one of them is the character journey Evie goes on. Her quest to find herself and discover who she really is isn't easy, and Evie being the strong character she is makes some tough decisions. I really want to sit here and list all the things I enjoyed about Evie, but for the sake of spoilers I'll sum my feelings up by saying I already admire Evie and all she had to deal with in Parnormalcy, but my admiration for her character grew even more. She is someone who not only can kick you butt and look hot doing so, but she also has a vulnerable side she rarely shows that I liked seeing.

Along with Evie, I felt each of the characters grew a lot more and become much more in-depth. I love the way Kiersten has written her characters, and I like the direction they each took. I liked that not only are some of my favorite characters back, but some new ones are introduced as well, each adding something to the story. Whether it's support for Evie, to add a twist in the plot, an element of surprise or of course to try and trick Evie. *sigh* Oh Reth...you bad boy you. I think I like you more than I should, but you've got some stiff competition. Lend, can I possibly like you even more, especially when you say those things you did to Evie. I have a feeling you'll be melting a few hearts.

Supernaturally's writing is flawless, it flows beautifully, and is unpredictable in an oh so good way. I could not figure out the ending and I absoultely love it when that happens. Kiersten kept me on my toes the whole time, from the way she creates her characters, to the story's brilliant humor and the wonderful twists. I adore Kiersten's writing. Okay, really I would love to bottle up her awesomeness and use it as my own. I loved this sequel. It's a must have book with it's snark, swoon worthy moments and plenty of laugh out lines. If you loved Parnormalcy, I highly recommend picking up Supernaturally. I can not wait to get my hands on the next book.

Mundane Monday #92

Happy Mundane Monday!! This leads up to one of my favorite scenes in City of Bones...

...."Except you. I bet you don't want to talk to me."

"No," said Clary. "I want to eat. I'm starving."

He brought his hand out from behind his back. In it was a slightly crumpled paper bag. "I sneaked some food from the kitchen when Isabelle wasn't looking."

Clary grinned. "A picnic? It's a little late for Central Park, don't you think? It's full of-"

He waved a hand. "Faeries. I know."

"I was going to say muggers," said Clary "Though I pity the mugger who goes after you."

"That is a wise attitude, and I commend you for it," said Jace, looking gratified. "But I wasn't thinking of Central Park. How about the greenhouse?"

Relic Master Series Giveaway

Happy Monday! Today we have a fabulous giveaway for one lucky follower. Thank you to Penguin, we have the entire set of Catherine Fisher's newest series, Relic Master up for grabs.

Here's a little bit about the series:

Welcome to Anara, a world mysteriously crumbling to devastation, where nothing is what it seems: Ancient relics emit technologically advanced powers, members of the old Order are hunted by the governing Watch yet revered by the people, and the great energy that connects all seems to also be destroying all. The only hope for the world lies in Galen, a man of the old Order and a Keeper of relics, and his sixteen-year-old apprentice, Raffi. They know of a secret relic with great power that has been hidden for centuries. As they search for it, they will be tested beyond their limits. For there are monsters-some human, some not-that also want the relic's power and will stop at nothing to get it.

RELIC MASTER is a four book series. Each book will be released over four consecutive months this summer:

Each book will include a piece of the map of Anara, the world of RELIC MASTER, on the reverse of the jacket. Collect all four books and you will have the complete map.

Dead Rules Blog Tour: Author Interview

We're kicking off The Teen Scene Book Scene's blog tour for Dead Rules by Randy Russell, and today we have a unique interview with Randy. Not only does he answer our questions, but he also answers our questions with lines from his book.

What inspired you to write Dead Rules?

Kurt Vonnegut and Tim Burton. Catch 22 and Don McLean’s American Pie. Any time Levon Helm picks up the sticks. Bat Out of Hell. John Prine. I’d especially liked to thank God for arranging so many sudden accidental deaths. And, finally, the Beach Boys’ Wouldn’t It Be Nice, because I believe strongly in silly hope and either bubblegum- or chocolate-scented soap.

Episodes from my real life?

A friend of mine committed suicide when she was 17 by shooting herself in the chest with a .22 because her boyfriend broke up with her. Home alone, she lay down on her bed and died. The next thing she remembers was hearing an emergency room surgeon saying “How the *(insert explicit word) am I supposed to go out there and tell those people their daughter is dead?”

I thought about this a long, long time. It just wouldn’t go away. The fact that love can be bad for you was on my mind when I started Dead Rules.

Which character do you feel you relate to the most?

This is going to sound like nines when everybody is wearing tens, but I can’t sort out the cats from the scratches when it comes to my own characters’ effects on me. I mean, they all drew blood. If I read “relate to” to mean most like me, I’m probably the kid on the skateboard in the hallway.

I likely relate more to characters written by other authors than I do to those in my own work. I’m really not an author who writes about me.

What's one YA book you've recently read that you wish you had as a teen?

I wouldn’t wish a book from the future on myself when I was a teen. I was screwed up enough trying to comprehend my current cultural condition. Best to know your now, if at all possible. Later will matter later.

If you could spend the day with any author from the past or present, who would you want to spend the day with and why?

Mary Shelley. She was such a startling genius at a very young age. But truly I’d much rather spend the day with someone who can play music or sing. Writers tend to bore me. What I want to know of a writer is on the page. Otherwise they simply sit and make incredibly redundant noises by clack clack clacking on a keyboard for hours at a time. I think you need ingest a couple good mushrooms to enjoy spending a day with an author.

What advice would you give to teens writers who want to become authors?

I think Robert Frost had it right. “Die early and avoid the fate.”

Or, what the hell, maybe it was Tom McGuane. “Do the little thing.”

Any advice I would have for teens would be along the lines of thinking to design a life that allows for writing. And not to let other people talk you out of it.
