Clockwork Angel Read Along Day 8: Chapter 7 The Clockwork Girl

It's day 8 of our Clockwork Angel Read Along! Please be sure to visit our link here for our schedule, guidelines and to fill out the form to be entered to win some fabulous prizes. Feel free to answer any number of the questions asked. You don't need to answer all of them if you don't wish to.

Today we're discussing chapter 7. The truth is starting to be revealed. We learn that de Quincy, Mortmain and the Dark Sisters are indeed all working together. Somehow Tessa and her brother tie into what they're doing. We also learn de Quincy is building a lot of automatons, but we still don't know why.

* Sophie again makes a comment about her disgust for Will. It seems unlikely something happened between them since he's a Shadowhunter and she's a servant, but when I first read CA I wondered if he hadn't been the cause of something that happened to Sophie or maybe she just doesn't like guys who have a lot of confidence and act cocky. What are you thoughts on why she can't stand Will?

* The Shadowhunters have pieced together that de Quincy, Mortmain and the Dark Sisters are all working together and their horrifying findings at the Dark Sisters's house, along with the automation, Tessa's brother Nate and Tessa are connected. They're also assuming the Magister is de Quince, a powerful vampire. The only think left to find is the missing piece. What or who do you think that missing piece is? How do you think Tessa's brother Nate fits into all this? Could he have been a victim or do you think something else is going on with him?

* I'm borrowing Henry's question from page 163, "What could a vampire want with a lot of half mechanical people?" I agree with Henry, this isn't making any sense. What are your thoughts on what de Quincy is doing?

39 comments:

  1. Ooh... De Quincey is building an army! That's really what I used to think. (But those who have finished CA will find a huge error in my sentence. :D)

And Nate... Poor, poor Nate. I'll stop there before I spoil anything, but I just have to say this: Nate is one of the characters that I hate the most. With a passion.

  2. * First of all I thought that something happened between them, but then I thought that it looks like Sophie doesn't like cocky guys, but still don't know why.

    * Nate was atracted to this dark world because of his problems with gambling, and what the dark sisters said is that he's a victim in there, is a prisoner, but with the comments of Camille, that she saw Nate at the parties, I start to doubt that.

    * It's an strange question, it actually makes no sense.. A Vampire can make a lot of vampires, why would he need automatons? mmm guess we'll find out soon ;)

  3. What interesting questions. Let me have a think...

*A tiny part of me wonders if Will reminds Sophie of her previous employer's son. Something bad happened to her and this son because as she spoke, she touched her scar without thinking. And I wonder if she put her hatred of this young man onto Will because he reminds Sophie so much as him...

As for the other two questions, I haven't the foggest. The more I read of Nate's involvement, the more I question him. Is he missing, kidnapped or is he WILLING missing?

And I have no idea about the automatons? The only thing I can think of is what Midnight Book Thief said. An army. But, as Tita said, that makes no sense because vampires can just create more vampires. I wonder if it is an army. Vampires fight at night while automaton fight during the day...?

We're gonna find out soon, me sense...

  4. * I thought that Will reminded Sophie of her past employers son, and she just automatically has a hatred toward him because of it.

    * When first reading this I thought there was more behind Nate missing. Since he had a gambling problem and was involved in the Pandemonium Club, I thought maybe he got himself into some trouble.

    * I had no clue what De Quincey would want a bunch of automatons for. He is already very powerful, and a vampire so I was very confused about it.

  5. I think Sophie can't stand Will because she's transferring her hatred of her old employer's son onto Will. From her reaction, it's obvious that something bad happened between her and the son and she probably thinks Will is capable of doing whatever the son did.

When I first read Clockwork Angel, I was very suspicious of Nate. I thought that if he was eventually found, he would be able to provide a lot of answers.

  6. I just assumed that Will to closely resembled Sophie's past employer's son and made it difficult for her to be around him, as well as he can just be a down right pain at times. :-)

I think Nate is totally out for himself and has gotten himself caught up in a situation that he can't handle. Somewhere along the way his sense of family and decency (if he ever truly had it) was destroyed. I kind of have to wonder if there isn't a bit of demon in him. He reminds me, if ever so slightly, of Sebastian from TMI.

I really think DeQuincey in trying to become more important has gotten himself run over and used. I really believe he is simply a pawn.

  7. From the beginning, Will's thing seemed to be making everyone hate him first, before he could be rejected. I also think he just likes giving people a hard time. As far as Sophie's hatred for him, it seemed to me to be tied to something else that wasn't entirely Will related.

Henry's logic made me suspect that DeQuincey was a pawn, or at the very least, not the only person in charge.

    ReplyDelete
  8. I didn't think that something specifically happened between Will and Sophie, just that she didn't trust boys like Will.

I figured that Nate had gotten himself into a lot of trouble the first time I read CA.

Building a group of automatons--sounds like an army!

  9. * I think Sophie just doesn’t like guys like Will…perhaps the reason for her scars has something to do with a cocky, teenaged boy?

    * I’m starting to wonder if Nate might have a larger role than Tessa would guess. I want him to be the victim, for Tessa’s sake, but he could very well be a willing participant in everything that’s happening. Which would so not be good.

    * Building a mechanical army? But even that's weird, for a vampire to do...

    ReplyDelete
  10. I think sophie can't stand will because she is reminded of the boy in her last jod, who i'm assuming gave her her scar, or had something to do with the scar.

I think maybe the missing piece is Nate, maybe he is part of this, maybe he is betraying his sister to de quincey.

Maybe the machines are not for be quincey at all maybe somebody else wants them to do their biding what ever that may be.

    ReplyDelete
  11. It's most possible that it's the hatred for whatever her old emplyer's son did to her that's transfered to Will becuase of the similiarties. I don't believe that Will really did something that would make him so awful in her eyes.

Since her brother knew of the club and asked to join in I'm not so sure he's a victim in this drama. It feels horrible to believe that he had a helping hand when it came to getting Tessa to London... but I'm not so sure. Becuase of his gambling it's also possible that he ran into trouble but I'm not so sure...

Automatons... like Henry said, it's probably for an army but also... why would a vampire need one? Maybe he's gonna sell them to someone for some reason.. maybe get more power.. or maybe getting London all to himself? I dunno... I guess time (aka reading) will tell...

  12. I think there's more about Sophie than her painful past and tragedy, I have a feeling she is gifted somehow, I know she has the sight but CC is a genius and I think she is reserving to Sophie something amazing and completely unexpected.

I don't really like Nate, I was suspicious of him since he was found at De Quince party. Nate is selfish and arrogant. I think he does love Tessa but he loves himself more.

    ReplyDelete
  13. I don't think Sophie trusts young men in general... specifically young men of a higher station. Add Wills arrogance and special breed of "charm" and they are like oil and water. I also think that it gives Sophie a feeling of some control to be able to talk back to Will. She needs that.

    ReplyDelete
  14. I think Sophie categorizes Will. He probably gives her the impression that he is like the arrogant young men she's used to because he throws that impression to everyone. Except maybe Jem.
The second one is kind of hard to answer since this is the 3rd time I've read the book. Don't want to give anything away, so I'll stop there ;)
Let's just say no one really knows de Quincy's motives.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Sophie/Will His cocky attitude rubs her the wrong way...he reminds her of someone from her past....

Nate I get a bad feeling about Nate...very selfcentered...think he may be working with the evil forces...addicted to gambling trying to pay off his debts and craves power

DeQuincey Should be very powerful as a vampire...don't know why he would need automatons...as a bargaining chip to sell or trade for something he needs...

  16. Gotta start by saying that I love Sophie. She is so great because she has her own oppinions and isn't afraid to act on them. I love her quote about the soap, how Charlotte is so kind because she gives her new soap. I read this and thought "Wow. She is a modest and respectfull person. I really like her." She stands her own against Jessie and hates Will with a passion. I think she hates will because Will is easy to hate. He is rude and arrogant and a straigh up jerk. I think she has a perfect right to hate him and I adore the way she does it, the right amount of sarcasm and sass.
On "the missing piece"- having read the book, this is hard to answer. I think that there is definatly something missing that isn't even learned by the last page. I feel it comming in the next books though.
Nate. Wow. Don't like him. I have the philosiphy that you get yourself into situations. How you get out is what counts. Nate totally broke this. He dosen't respect the shadowhunters, care for them, even acknowledge them other then hate. Thats a little dense for people who saved his life.
De Quincey- I love his cultered but evil personality. Let me clarify. I like how there is a dark character known well instead of the niceness of the shadowhunters. Again, already read the book, already know how it ends. But, as he had the blueprints for them, I think he has a reason/use but I could never figure out what.

    ReplyDelete
  17. When I first read it, I figured that de Quincey wanted the mechanical pieces b/c he was building an army. For what, I'm not sure. Maybe to take over the shadowhunters?

    ReplyDelete
  18. My first thought on Sophie's disgust for Will was that they had some kind of romantic relationship and she ended up emotionally hurt,or that he liked to flirt with her,and she couldn't just make him get away of her life (but she wishes haha)

    ReplyDelete
  19. Sophie doesn't like Will because she knows that there is something wrong with him.

Nate is involved because he is the only link to the Magister to get Tessa.

De Qincey isn't the Magister, I don't think. I think it's Mortmain and I think he wants to build an army for something.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I think that Sophie's contempt for Will has to do with how she was treated at the place she was before. Will's attitude does not help Sophie to even think about seeing Will having any bit of kindness in him.
I believe at this point that Nate is either dead or for some reason is working with the Magister.
And commenting on the question that Henry asked, I don't think De Quincey is the Magister it does not make since at all. So that leaves Mortmain as the Magister. The Magister seems to have some big plans it's just finding out what and why.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I think Sophie does not like arrogant guys who get their way because of what happened to her at her former employer's home. I think Will reminds her of someone from that place and she projects that on Will.

I think Nate is mixed-up in all this mess with Tessa, the Dark Sisters and the Magister. I think it is going to come out that he is not so innocent.

I find it hard to believe that a vampire would be making an army of automations when he can just make a vampire army! I think maybe de Quincey is not the Magister.

    ReplyDelete
  22. It could be like the Maia thing with how she doesnt like Jace because he reminds her of her brother. Perhaps there is someone who seriously hurt her in her past. I personally Don't think De Quincy is the main antagonist. I feel like he is just another lackey. Just another pawn in the magisters scheme. And I already know what happens to Tessa's brother so i don't want to ruin it for everyone else

    ReplyDelete
  23. I love each of your takes the questions. It's interesting to see how similar many of our answers are. Thank you for being apart of the tour!

    ReplyDelete
  24. I think Sophie's disgust for Will and her scar have something in common. He may remind her of whoever did that to her.

    ReplyDelete
  25. It's obvious that Sophie's dislike for Will isn't actually from a personal affliction because she isn't hateful to him as a person, just about his attributes and the way he gets on. This makes me feel that like what others have said, he reminds her of someone else who had similar qualities and has hurt her deeply. Maybe even broken her heart, or do with her scar.
    ------------------------------------------------

As I said before I don't think DeQuincy has much to do with it at all. Maybe he is a member of the pandemonium club but like I said, he was introduced for too late on to be a main in the clockwork plot. I doubt he has any need for the automatons at all, instead Mortmain is a much more deceiving character. He knew all that information and just happened to know who was behind it all? I doubt it would be as simple as that.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Will is kind of hard to like. The rare moments were when I DID like him; he was a jerk most of the time, and I could see why Sophie hates him. DeQuincy seems to have a fighting purpose for those mechanical people, and I wonder how effective they are against Shadowhunters.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Having a mechanical army would be a good thing if you are trying to take over the world. Also I would imagine that a mechanical person would be easier to replace versus a Shadowhunter.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Will must have done something in particular to upset Sophie for the obvious animosity to exist between the two. Obviously, the resemblance to her former employer's son who was a jerk doesn't help, but one can't help but wonder what *else* must have happened between them. Perhaps we'll find out as we keep reading.

Regarding the automatons, I would assume that a vampire would want them to do their bidding during the daylight hours when they're incapacitated. They could be their protectors, servants, and be useful for many other tasks while they're unable to do anything themselves. That's just one theory.

    ReplyDelete
  29. * I agree with most of you, Will reminded Sophie of her past employers son. I got the impression that spoiled son was the one who caused her scar.

    * I have no clue what a vampire would need for automatons. But at this point, we only have Mr. Mortmains word he is in charge of this. He could just be one of the minor players in it for the money. I have no idea how Tessa's brother fits in. At this point he appears to be a victim.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Sounds like Will maybe is a lot like the son of her last employer, who she seemed to imply acted impulsively and gave her the scar?

I'm not convinced that de Quincey is the Magister, I still think it's Mortmain. He is way too connected to everything at this point. Regarding the automatons, I was thinking that back then, everyone had servants, which doesn't afford you a lot of privacy. But, if they are robots, they will keep your secrets. This would definitely be beneficial to someone up to no good. Plus, they probably make great servants for vampires, since there's no danger of accidentally killing the maid...

    ReplyDelete
  31. I really feel bad for Nate. He seems to be just another silly mundane that got caught up with the downwolders. Or so I thought.

It does seem odd that a vampire would need an army of robots. Wouldn't he just make more vampires?

    ReplyDelete
  32. I think it is normal for someone to hate Will at first just because he is just too cocky and quirky at most of the time. I think ill do the same if ill ever meet Will.

I have no idea what the missing piece is but I really think Nate knows what Tessa really is and he works in the Pandemonium club which I don't know who runs. To think that no one knows about Tessa not until Nate brother subjected her to come to London. I think he is being hold by someone powerful, the magister maybe?

I think Mortmain is misleading the Shadowhunters, I don't think that De Quincy is the Magister. I have a tiny inkling that Mortmain IS the Magister.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Sophie doesn't like cocky arrogant people in general and I don't blame her. She went through a horrible experience with her last employer and Will makes it easy to remind her of that so she just automatically hates him.

I think the missing piece is Nate. I find it very odd that he is nowhere to be found. He is also associated with the Dark Sisters because he had them pick Tessa up at the port so in turn he is associated with the Magister. I don't think he is a victim at all. He may be troubled but it's just weird that is somewhere and apparently no one knows where.

I also don't see why a vampire would have mechanical people. Vampires are pretty much immortal and De Quincy is the head vampire so that really doesn't make sense that he would make them. I am starting to think he is not involved that he is just off somewhere doing his own thing and just being used for a distraction.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I think something happened to Sophie involving someone like Will so she resents anyone who reminds her of the person who hurt her.

I don't think Nate is innocent. I don't know what he's doing but he doesn't seem as 'holier than thou' as Tessa makes him out to be. Maybe he knows more about Tessa's past and who/what she is than he's leading on?

What I wonder is why we never heard of these automatons in the Mortal Instruments series. Something must have happened to wipe them out and the idea of creating more.

I think De Quincey is not leadership material, not smart enough to be the Magister. Though it would make sense if the Magister was a vampire...

    ReplyDelete
  35. i think that sophie may have liked will before. but then she started to get more of an insight into what his personality was like, and i guess she just doen't like him because he's so arrogant and saracastic and what not. and i think he reminds her of her old employer, so i understand why she just doesnt like him much. she might even be a bit scared of him, because we see that will is quite unpredictable. also i think will probably poked fun at and teased sophie, so i understand why she wouldnt particularly enjoy his company.

at this point i was quite unsure about how nate's brother fit into all of it. at the beginning we think that nate was kidnapped or something to get tessa to cooperate with the magister. i think maybe cassie wanted us to think that nate was a victim, because he was forced to tell tessa to cooperate with the dark sisters, but that seems too straight forward for cassie's stories. and plus since we find out mortmain is associated with the dark sisters and de quincy, and that nate was working for mortmain before, that seems like a strange coincidence. so because nate was working for mortmain, maybe he knows something about what mortmain is up to? mortmain still sounds fishy.

as i said earlier, i don't believe that de quincy would be making automatons. there would be no need for a vampire to make inanimate objects to do his bidding. Since he's the head of a vampire clan, he has his other vampires to do stuff for him. And I don't think a vampire would bother experimenting with this type of stuff, because I don't see how it would benefit him.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Tessa always expects there to be a divide between the upper class and the servants. Sophie may have been brought up to expect a certain treatment from the people she works for. Will acts familiar with her and the lingering looks probably make her feel uncomfortable.

I like the suggestion that has come up of vampires using tha automatons to do their bidding during daylight. It makes me wonder if these vamps have human servants that are ties to them through their blood like in the MI books.

    ReplyDelete
  37. - The first time I read CWA I thought Will had done something awful to her and I kept trying to figure it out...but then she said what actually happened. I think it's a bit unfair, but Will probably doesn't care or thinks he deserves it.

    - I think the missing piece here is why Tessa and Nate are connected, the full story behind Tessa's ability.

    - I think he's building an army.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I thought that Will and Sophie had a secret relationship in the past when I first read the book.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I was under the impression that Will had just been himself around Sophie, therefore she just hated him, ha!

There's something up with that, because downworlders aren't interested in random mundanes. I'm pretty sure Nate did something to piss them off majorly.
