We Heart Indies

May 31st has now been dubbed "We Heart Indies" Day thank you to Lisa and Laura Roecker. I am so excited to be taking part in this fun blog event.

I love going into book stores, especially Indie ones. They have that certain smell, and a feel about them that is unique and inviting. I don't know about you, but I love the smell of books. It doesn't matter if it's a new book or an old book, there's just something about the smell of a book that I love. Indie book stores have that smell to them. Which isn't surprising since they have vast collections of books that not only supports local authors, but a large number of authors for most every genre you can think of.

One of the things I love most about my local Indie store, Book People, are the large number of author events they host. They've held huge gathering from the Smart Chicks Kick It Tour, to local author Rick Riordan, to supporting the local book festivals for both the Austin Teen Book Festival and the TX Book Festival, and every thing in between. They are extremely supportive of all the authors who come to town and of the local author events. It's not just their vast collection of books I can find in their store or the large number of author events they've hosted that makes me love them, it's also the people that work there that I've been able to get to know. They are just as supportive of us, as we are to them. I love it when a book store becomes more than a store, they become a friend and that's why I Heart My Local Indie Book Store.

I want to know what local Indie store you love and why. GIVEAWAY- Leave us a comment with your name and email address letting us know what your favorite Indie Store is and why, and you'll be entered to win one of the SIGNED books I'll be picking up from Harper Teen's The Dark Days of Supernatural Tour next week at Book People.

  1. Hey girls,
I have one Indie Bookstore here in Chico, Lyon Books. I love the place so much! I put a link to their website on my blog a couple months ago. I met the owner when one of my nephews won a writing award that he got to read at her store. We have become great friends, we share ARC's and our love of books. I quit buying books from Barnes and Nobles, and only purchase from them now. They also have a great selection of used books. They hold tons of local author events, and one day I hope to be one of those authors invited to speak there!
Thanks again for reminding me how much I love my Indie!

  2. Thanks for the giveaway!!

I really like Books Inc. because the people are very nice. Every time I enter the bookstore, there's always an employee that asks if they can help me with anything with smiles. :)

  3. Thx for the giveaway! I would have to say Novel Place. I don't have many indie books stores near where I live, but I am glad this one is. The employees are so nice and will help you with anything you need. They are always recommending books that I would never of picked up but ended up loving. They are more personal than a higher brand store, like Borders.

  4. Treehouse Books in Ashland, OR is where I got ot pick up books for the family while I haunt Bloomsbery Books for my own reading pleasure. I love the close knitted atmosphere of small booksellers when you want to kick back into one of their comfy chairs and try out a few reads.

  5. Small Indie Bookstores really rock the reads for me. I love that the workers always remeber you and what you read and pop out with some great selections sometimes. While we are in a tiny nowhere town and never have any author signings, I love that they keep up on events for me.
My favorite bookstore is Oregon Books.

  6. My favorite Indie bookstore is this great little place in Sisters Oregon. They are so friendly and the ambiance is to die for. The best part though is that wonderful smell of used and new books when you walk in the door.

  8. Does a used bookstore count? I don't know if it's exactly considered Indie, but it's locally-owned! Bookmans in AZ. Best store ever <3 I love taking old movies and things in and then getting credit to buy BOOKS. Plus it's quite literally right around the corner from me, which is amazing. They also have cool programs for kids and teens and they're always hosting fun community-wide events.

  10. There is only 1 indie bookstore where I live. It is so adorable! It is a little, yellow house w/white shutters. Very cheerful! Seems to me most indie bookstores have cats, I wonder why?

  12. I am absolutely in love with a store here called Downtown Books. It has three floors and it's like one huge labyrinth. Two cats reside there, sleeping on the bookshelves and following me around, making it feel even more like home. The sad thing is that it's supposed to be closing soon. I'm just hoping that I'll get to show my boyfriend (he'll be visiting from Colombia soon) before it's gone forever. It's really a great place. I hope to visit more like it in the future.

  13. Thank you for all your comments. That's so sad to hear that two of the indie stores will be closing. It's such a loss when indie's close up shop.
I've loved reading about all the various stores.

  14. I don't know any indie book stores near me, and I'm not sure we have any over here in Lithuania. I usually get my books online, from BookMooch or The Book Depository.
    Thanks for the chance!
