Book Review- London Deep

By Robin Price
Illustrated by Paul McGrory
Published by Mogzilla
Released on Feburary 1st, 2010
Source- ARC from Mogzilla
3.5 Stars- It's A Good Read

London Deep is set in the future, in a flooded London - where rival police forces for kids and adults compete to keep the peace. Jemima Mallard is having a bad day. First she loses her air, then two kids sink her houseboat, and now the YPD (Youth Police) think she's mixed up with a criminal called Father Thames. Not even her dad, a Chief Inspector with the 'Dult Police, can help her out this time (quoted from the back of the ARC).

London Deep is a futuristic story set in London, England. London is flooded and the city is divided by youth and adults. Each group has their own law enforcement, YPD and APD. Jem's father works for the APD, her mother is missing and someone just blew up her house boat. While in search of answers, Jem is arrested by a YPD officer named Nick and accused of working with the criminal "Father Thames". Jem and Nick soon find themselves face to face with "Father Thames" and realize there's a lot more at stake under the waters of the sinking city.

London Deep is a fun, unique read as it's a graphic novel, and novella mix. I really liked the graphics as they are both catchy and a little edgy, fitting in perfectly with the books feel. What makes this book stand out from other graphic novels is that London Deep's graphics are actually part of the story, which I think this is what will make the book appealing to both tween and YA readers.

London Deep is a great mix of story telling and graphics, it's clean style make it one readers as young as 8-9 can read. While it's marketed for YA, I would recommend this to middle graders as well, as I think the writing style would be more appealing to them. The characters are great, the story is fast paced and I'm looking forward to reading the second books in the series.

Waiting On Wednesday- Dear Bully

I'm a list kind of girl and my list for our WOWs is huge and never seems to stop growing. There are so many books being published soon that I can't wait to read. I found another book to add to this list this morning while cruising around the blogging world, I visited Dawn Metcalf's blog (http://dawn-metcalf.livejournal.com/) and found a book that I had no idea was going to be out next year. Now that I've seen it, I can't wait to read it! The book is called Dear Bully.

Bullying has become such a huge problem, not just in America, but world wide. I think it's fascinating and amazing that authors like Dawn, Jo Knowles, Heather Brewer, Carrie Jones, Ellen Hopkins, R.L. Stine, Lisa McMann, Lauren Oliver, Saundra Mitchell and many more got together and shared their stories in this anthology. What better way to communicate with kids about bullying, than by authors who write for the kids who are being effected by bullying.

Read the article that Publisher's Weekly posted about the book called DEAR BULLY
Be sure to join their facebook group YA Authors Against Bullying.

Be sure to pick up this book when it's released in the fall of 2011 by HarperTeen!

Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted at Breaking the Spine, and allows us to spotlight a book that we are eagerly awaiting to be released.
