Mockingjay 13 District Blog Tour: District 11

While we Mundie Moms would do everything we can to protect our children, even if that meant leaving behind our homes, family and friends, the parents in the Hunger Games didn't necessarily have those same options. The parent's role is a very different one in the Hunger Games series. While parents may love their children, many of them seem to accept that the Capitol controls what their children do, not them. The parent's rule seems so limited, or maybe they just allowed it to be that way.

In accepting the Capitol as their ruler, they in some ways, gave up their parental rights. Regardless of how a parent wants to raise their child, or wants them to do, the Capitol makes the final decision. Parent's don't even have a choice when their child is the one entering the games. They seem to accept that, that is their child's fate. If that were my child, I'd be going Shadowhunter on someone. But, where do you go and what do you do when you're from one of the poorest districts?

This is the case for District 11.

Being a district of Agriculture, you would think we'd be a rich, thriving district, but we're not. We're one of the poorest. Though we work along side our children in the orchards and the fields, the Capitol controls what we do. We don't even have enough food to feed our children. Most of what we grow is sent to the Capitol. It's a helpless feeling, watching our children labor such long hours, at such young ages.

Sometimes our children are so hungry that they may eat what they are picking, but if they are caught, they are shot. Do you know how hard that is? We can't even protect our children on our own land! The guards are ruthless, but maybe that's a good thing. It prepares our children for what they may face if they're one of the chosen ones to enter the games.

Rue and Thresh gave us hope and their lives weren't lost for nothing. While our parenting rights may be limited, our children are our hope. They can change the outcome of the Capitol's rule, where we as their parents, just accepted our fate.

Tell us, what would you do if you were a parent in District 11 and had very limited options? Would you have stayed and just accepted your fate and relied on the hope of your children to change the future? Or would you have risked your life and tried to leave, with no resources, and no outside help?

CWA Celebrations-Day 25, Character Introduction, Jem

With permission from Cassie, this week we're introducing you to the characters of Clockwork Angel. Each character description and artwork (by Val) posted, is quoted from and will be linked back to Cassie's Infernal Devices site.

Jem is a character whom, I think, many readers will fall in love with. He's someone who Tessa can confide in and someone who knows how to handle Will. He may not look like a shadowhunter, but Jem can be just as lethal as Will when he needs to be.

Jem: Brought up in the Institute in Shanghai, Jem's parents were killed by a demon who allowed Jem to live—but with a terrible price to be paid. Frail and silver-haired, Jem seems an unlikely demon-killer, but his skills and swift intelligence make him a formidable foe. He finds a kindred spirit in Tessa as both of them feel they are torn between two worlds, neither belonging completely to one or to the other. As Jem's affection for her grows, will Will have to hurt the only person in his life he's ever seemed to care about?

A hidden truth.
Mortal enemies.
Doomed love.

Marked as special at an early age, Jacinda knows her every move is watched. But she longs for freedom to make her own choices. When she breaks the most sacred tenet among her kind, she nearly pays with her life. Until a beautiful stranger saves her. A stranger who was sent to hunt those like her. For Jacinda is a draki—a descendant of dragons whose greatest defense is her secret ability to shift into human form.

Forced to flee into the mortal world with her family, Jacinda struggles to adapt to her new surroundings. The only bright light is Will. Gorgeous, elusive Will who stirs her inner draki to life. Although she is irresistibly drawn to him, Jacinda knows Will's dark secret: He and his family are hunters. She should avoid him at all costs. But her inner draki is slowly slipping away—if it dies she will be left as a human forever. She'll do anything to prevent that. Even if it means getting closer to her most dangerous enemy.

Mythical powers and breathtaking romance ignite in this story of a girl who defies all expectations and whose love crosses an ancient divide

I am so excited for Firelight's release. Outside Clockwork Angel, this is my favorite Summer read. It's one of those books you sit down to read and you become so engrossed with the story, that before long you're wondering how you already finished the book. Firelight's ending will leave you wishing you had the sequel. If you're looking for a read that has magic, romance, action and danger, I highly recommend pre-ordering Firelight.

If you're in the Austin area, Sophie Jordan will be at The Austin Teen Book Festival on October 2nd! You can find a link to the ATBF via their button in our right hand side bar.
